The Away Race Coordinator will assist our traveling runners to connect and meet up while participating in events in other states. Welcome and congratulate our Away Race Coordinator - Ruth Bonacci. You can contact: Strider Travelogs As the new away race coordinator I seek to help Striders find other Striders going to out of town races. I just got back [7/22/07] from two and a half weeks in Nome. Alaska. No, I did not go on a cruise! And no, I did not run a marathon up there!! I was visiting my daughter. Running up there turned out to be problematic. Nome is a city, albeit a small one, with cabs and trucks and all of the traffic one associates with a larger city. As one ventures out of town there is wildlife to contend with. Since I ran on roads I really was not as threatened by the prospect of encountering bears or moose but I had a nasty encounter with a bird. The Arctic Tern lays it eggs on ground since Nome is in the tundra. One swooped down on me and I could have been pecked but I turned around and ran away. Needless to say I am glad to be running in groups again in an area I know and understand. I have two events I am trying to help set up. The first one is September is the Mackinac Island 8 Mile Road Race on September 8, 2007. Here is the link to the race: 37th Annual Mackinac Island 8 Mile Run/Walk Here is the link to Mackinac City. This is the town I stayed in last year. The sad news is that I will probably not be able to go this year because I cannot get off work on Friday. To really do this right you need to leave Friday morning, arrive Friday afternoon and go around Mackinac City, and take the ferry to the island on Saturday morning for the race. You can stay another night or come home afer enjoying the island on Saturday. I am willing to coordinate arrangements for interested Striders who want to go up for what I consider one of the best races I ever ran. The second race I want to present for your consideration is P.F. Chang's Rock and Roll Arizona. You can run the full marathon or the half marathon. Though last year had unseasonably cold temperatures, the Striders had a great time. Patrice Lawson qualified for Boston and Jack Potter won prize money!!! Last year one of our new Striders hosted a pasta dinner at her brother's home the night before. Let me know if you are interested in either of these races. Also feel free to send to me any races you think Striders might like to travel to. |
